I saw the same problem as the OP (dialog box stays up).  The problem
always appears for both the desktop switcher and the window switcher,
if it appears at all.

I don't remember the exact details, but it was some Gnome-ish program
that was running.  Turning that program off cured the problems.  I
think it was gnome-settings-daemon, but I'm not sure.
