cmdline patch

I'm kicking myself for not dealing with this better the first time but
this definitely looks better to me.  It should also be easier to make
changes to (new/changed options) later on.  The original intent was only
trying to fix a memory read error that valgrind reported which I had
introduced (stupidly I might add).   I decided to make all of these
changes to better deal with the problem of single and double hyphen
options clashing with each other and I think this is a bit simpler and
easier to understand than what I was doing before.  I'll commit tomorrow
after some extra just-in-case testing unless someone sees something evil
in it.
