fwiw, this seems to be a common issue, so the installer should probably at
least say "you don't appear to have Joliet support, so this isn't going to
work", so I don't have to.
I'm a little annoyed that Joliet is optional, because damned near every
commercial CD uses it, and it's really just Linux snobbery anyhow: there's
really nothing wrong with Joliet, as opposed to Rock Ridge, except
Microsoft invented it, so it must be bad.
At any rate, this discussion is getting both off-topic and silly, so let's
take it off the mailing list.
