Using the tarball hoses your chances of using the updater in the future 
on that install.

No, I think there'll be a better solution. Worse comes to worst, I'll 
just take the broken patches out of the autoupdater and put a blessed 
patched in there like you suggested. This leaves people that pull from 
FilePlanet and are sitting at an arbitrary patchlevel flapping in the 
wind, though.

Seriously, I think this is fixable, but i'll have an ugly short-term 
solution to get you guys up shortly.
