Oh.  I assumed they would effectively do the same thing.  What is the 
difference between using the tarball and the updater then?

Is there a way that some script could make it appear as though the 
update had been run even if the tarball was all that was applied?  So 
that future patches would apply cleanly?

Just thinking out loud here...
