[mohaa] sv_fps and performance

yup. I figured you were on top of the maxrate and ping issue, just wanted to
write back as Im sorta bored at work (Friday - who wants to be here on
Friday?).....LOL.

One other comment from a fellow admin about gamers complaining about the all
encompassing 'lag'. Im a perfectionist as well and used to practically freak
out if anyone on the servers even breathed the word 'lag' - now I freakin
ignore them for the most part. Here's why: there are too many factors that
could contribute to 'lag', including the usual network performance
fluctuation, and some server issues (like maybe sv_fps), but most of the
'lag' people complain about is due to them having their pc running Kazaa in
the background while playing, or running it on their moms PII 400, etc.....

If I get consistent reports of lag from gamers I trust then I look into it
(which is pretty much never), otherwise I ignore them as they are usually
just looking for an excuse as to why they just got sniped for the tenth time
in 2 minutes anyway......

;)

Hey Luke,

Thanks for the reply.

I have my sv_maxRate set to 9000 already. I learned the impact of that type
of setting back when I was running my UT server a few years ago. =) The
server administration tool I developed also has the capability of policing
high-ping players and I have it set to average the five most current ping
values and drop anyone above 300 which usually keeps the pings for players
to 200 or below. Also, I'm running on a 1.2GHz Athlon with 512MB of memory
and I'm not seeing a problem with the system handling the load. The server
is connected to a T3 line, so that's not the problem either.

It's not a huge problem, but it's noticeable at times. Being somewhat of a
perfectionist, I like to shoot for velvet-smooth performance whenever
possible which is why I'm fiddling around with this. I'm wondering whether
the Windows version behaves the same way or if this is a Linux-only issue.
