Hi Folks,

First, my apologies for a modestly off topic post.
But I'm hoping it will be interesting to at least some of you.

I'm involved with the 'Desktop Architects' working group that
OSDL has convened.

We met last December in Portland to talk about ways to
improve Linux adoption. One of the ideas we took away
was that if we could improve the overall ISV experience,
it sure wouldn't hurt.

To that end, we've started an effort dubbed 'The Portland Project'.

We've got several different approaches to this going;
I'm spearheading an effort to put together a very
simple set of scripts that ISVs can use to interface
with the Linux desktop.

I've pulled together a very initial version of the
proposed 'xdg-utils' package. A very small (25K)
tarball is available here:

I'm also attaching the README me that goes with the tar ball.

I'm hoping that it will be largely self explanatory
(if it isn't, then that's a bug <grin>).

If you're interested in deploying apps on Linux, I would
very much appreciate your feedback on this.

I'm trying to understand if this basic approach is sound,
or if this looks like another useless Good Idea (TM).

Feedback much appreciated.

Cheers,

Jeremy
