I must be on crack, this started working without Ludwig's patch. On 
Ubuntu, I had to have _exactly_ this string:

  export LANG=fr_FR.utf8

I think I tried things like "fr" and "fr_FR" and "fr_FR.UTF-8". I 
noticed that "LANG=fr ls missingfilename.txt" gave me an English "No 
such file or directory", and decided to revisit it, since it was now 
clear I was the problem.  :)

I swear there was a time, years ago, when LANG=fr worked, I guess that 
was before things like character encoding got more (less?) standardized.

Anyhow, nothing to see here, move along.
