setup.sh and Makefile.in fixes

Makefile.in: print the directory name when a make install fails because of
missing directory

setup.sh:

if xsu is not present/screws up (see my earlier mail, I took it out of the
setup for now), su is attempted. Needs the same exit status check as xsu
to exit or continue as user.
+ fixes GET_ROOT=1 cases, where getting root is not required but still attempted.
