Pure/non-pure are the simplest case where you only consider factory files.

The ability to customize the list of files to check is quite ingenious.

Note that this isn't foolproof. If you don't physically control the client, 
cheating remains possible. For instance, a second program can patch code in 
the client while it's running. I've seen this kind of trick used to get at 
game variables in another game that weren't accessible to the scripting 
language, by using the Win32 debugger API's to access the running process.
