Also on this problem I should mention I'm using gentoo, kernel 2.4.20-gentoo-r5, as Andreas mentioned that was the development platform (I switched from RedHat). Any ideas as to what 1.4 could be looking up at the start, with a 30 second timeout (and no problems when it does time out)? thanks johnS
