If all you want is transparency for terminal windows I've had very good
luck with hsetroot instead of full-blown xcompmgr.

Also, I recently went through a whole round of testing every terminal I
could find because I was finally fed up with the artifacts in my old
one. The winner (well, for me anyway) was Terminal from xfce4. Great
pseudo-transparency support with no artifacts of any kind. Great UTF-8
support, all the features I care about, very little I don't, and very
few dependencies.
