You need to run a composite manager to use the composite extension:

xcompmgr -c -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55 &
urxvt -depth 32 -fg white -bg rgba:0000/0000/0000/bbbb

Will give you a see-through terminal window.

I'll add that to the upgrading guide.
