[openbox] Smart windows placement without center option

You mean "with center option disabled"?

FWIW, this exact configuration works for me fine here with 3.4.3, with
the only difference from 3.4.2 being the order in which the windows are
placed (see my previous e-mail I just sent to the list).

You might want to double check that you've actually loaded the
configuration? :-)
