Well, if you want a really easy-to-use desktop, why don't you try Nautilus or Rox?

Try runnig "nautilus -n", or "rox -p default" when you run openbox. I'd recommed Rox because it's less resource-hungry. Konqueror can also manage your desktop, if you're more of a QT/KDE guy.
