[openbox] How do windows set their icons?

To be  completely  clear:   the  application  (not  the   "application
packager", "OS maintainer",  etc)  creates the  pixmap when it's  run,
right?  Does it place that pixmap somewhere in the filesystem, or does
it provide a pointer to a memory location, or...?
