It turns out one of the patch selection things that was bugging me may be
something else. It seems if the camera is inside the bounding box of a patch,
you cannot select it from the camera view. It makes sense to not be able to
select brushes from the inside, but maybe not patches.

There is some other wierdness with not being able to select patches, but I
haven't fully figured it out yet.
