looks like the only solution is to carefully look at a run with debug versions
of the Gtk DLLs

cleaned up more stuff, made m_mnuDrop a global static of XYWnd
there seems to be a memory corruption of some kind, causing different variety of
crashes, but it happens somewhere inside Gtk DLLs probably (cf. Arnout comment)

checking in my cleanup (even if it doesn't solve anything, merely moves the
crash somewhere else).

marking this bug as dependent on Gtk+ upgrade
