By default I would enable OpenGL compression if available. After a scan for 
available extensions, I would put a roll-down or radio buttons in preferences 
offering the choice between DXT1, DXT3, DXT5 and OpenGL compression. "Please 
re-start GtkRadiant for your changed to take effect." We save this in the 
prefs file and Bob's your uncle!
