That works pretty well when the only thing on the line is your
reputation. When it becomes a question of money, such a tactic (I
hear) is counter-productive.

Look at the MAFIAA. They don't give a crap about their reputation
precisely because they have money. While Epic luckily doesn't resort
to extortion and bribing politicians (the politically correct term
here being "lobbying"), I'm sure that by now they don't have to care
about their reputation anymore either, since enough people are gonna
buy Gears of War n+1 anyway.
