debian 4 ut2004 no mouse

I'm using debian 4 i386. I just installed ut2004 off the cds, did the
ece bonus pack and the 3369-1 hot fix patch. The game starts up and I
can move the mouse and use the keyboard to interact with the menu's but
when I start a game, there is no splash screen while the level is
loading and once the level loads, I can click to start the round but the
game won't accept any input from the keyboard or mouse other than the ~
key.

Help please!
