I've had that problem randomly with the NVIDIA 6000 series of drivers. 
6111 does it less frequently than earlier verisons in that line. I don't 
_think_ gdm (I actually use kdm) is crashing. I think that the driver is 
not changing modes properly and causes X to barf. I've also seen it 
happen when I was not running kdm. I was just dropped back to the 
console I had run "startx" in.
