Gaming runlevel

Hi all,
    I am trying to find info on how to use runlevel 4 on my Fedora box 
specifically for gaming. That way I can only have the bare minimum of 
processes running and not be wasting resources on unnecessary stuff like 
a window manager,etc.. . If somebody could tell me  how to do this or 
point me in the right direction I would be very greatful. I have looked 
online all over the place and I can't seem to find anthing detailed 
about this. I can 'telinit' to runlevel 4 and    'startx' but how do I 
run the game  when all I have is a black screen with a big '+' on it?
     Also, I don't know if anyone else has noticed this problem, but 
with the latest Nvidia drivers (5336) my glxgears framerate has dropped 
about 40% from about 1050fps fullscreen to around 650fps. Is there 
something I need to tweak somewhere? I use the nvidia-installer to 
install them, should I just uninstall them and go back to the old 
drivers? TIA.
