Red Orchestra 3.0 startup failure?

Mandrake 10.0, latest Nvidia driver set, 3270 beta patch. Ut2004 runs
just fine.

running RedOrchestra gives the following error message after the inital
UT2004 popup screen:

_X11TransSocketOpen: socket() failed for local
_X11TransSocketOpenCOTSClient: Unable to open socket for local
_X11TransOpen: transport open failed for local/thoth:0
Couldn't set video mode: Could not create GL context
