amd64/Radeon possible?

Is it possible to run UT2004/amd64 with a radeon board? I'm using the
DRI drivers (don't seem to be any proprietary drivers). The opening
scene is all screwed up, with planes with gibberish textures in odd
places, totally obscuring the nvidia logo and player except for a few
frames. This happened with the release bins, the 03222004 build, and the
kintersect-fix build. With the release, it crashed within 30 secs of the
load screen when I tried to do a practice match, and it had the screwy
textures. I didn't try to enter a game with 03222004, but it crashed at
the end of the load screen with the kintersect-fix (after level music
had started). I've tried using system libSDL-1.2.so.0 with the
kintersect-fix, same results (didn't try entering game). Sound is
working fine, as far as I can tell. I saw in the lgfaq item
video -> I have a Radeon card. Why won't UT2003 run?
that S3TC is only supported in the proprietary drivers (or at least
that's what I think it means), and my logfile has a warning about

Though it says "for good performance" not "in order to run".
       The most ominous looking part of the log is a large number of
repeated lines:

They take up about 21k of the file, so they are compressed to single
instances with uniq < UT2004.log in the attached log.

Is this a bug, a known issue with the DRI drivers that I have to wait
for ATI to release proprietary drivers for, or a misconfiguration on my
part?
