bitmaps - they only support being on or off.  Openbox uses it as a mask 
to draw the button glyphs, and the theme can specify how the on pixels 
and the off pixels are rendered.

Gamma's themes (http://gamma.pnosker.com) are decently sectioned, but 
the best one's I've seen for picking stuff up is Cerement's site 
(http://www.absinthe182.com).  Grab some themes from there and poke 
around in theme to get used to the options available.
