Shockwave,

You make an obvious point. In this instance, I am the "client" and
believe it or not I own my own legit copy. I run my server for myself
and a couple of other guys in a clan I host. That being said, not all
the "pathetic losers" are out to do harm. It's a circle Shockwave, one
you nor I can stop right now. The security is becoming tighter as EA has
shown, but is by no means 100% accurate. Eventually they'll tighten it.
Ryan is obviously helping to do that, and is doing very well.

I protect my servers like I everyone else, but really we're all at the
mercy of hackers 24/7. This is capitalism at work my friend. Its what
makes things go around. The breakers and the fixers. They break it, and
we try to patch it up until the next time. I'm not spreading the
downfall of humanity by allowing a few fellow game enthusiastic to ride
off my bandwidth no matter where their copies came from. I don't' ask
them, and I can imagine that every big game hosting service out there
doesn't either. Those are your fish to fry.

As for hosting clients attempting freeloads? Anyone who runs a web
hosting business can tell you a story. I've got a few of my own.

I'm sure you're this passionate about download music too. I would
imagine your hard drive doesn't have a single MP3 on it. Good for you.

Thanks for the speech though, it was sincere and I appreciate what you
said. Albeit off topic and somewhat rude to the other members of this
list, its understandable.

If you would like to continue this discussion, please feel free to email
me off the mailing list. I bear you no hard feelings and I understand
your point.

Neil

Hello Neil,

On the contrary, it is everyone's business. Allowing illegal copies of
the software to function properly removes the incentive to purchase a
legal copy of the game. I sincerely hope you don't derive income from
the sale of software you have written yourself because that would make
you a hypocrite as well as ignorant. Anyone who can afford to own a
gaming computer can afford a legitimate copy of the game. Turning a
blind eye to this issue won't make it go away.

The funny thing about capitalism is that if you take the profit out of
the equation, you take away the incentive to invest in projects like
this. Without the revenue from legitimate sales of a given software
title, there are no funds available to pay the programmers who create
the games, much less people like Ryan who create these Linux versions.
No financial backing means no new flashy game titles. It's really that
simple. This isn't a case of people not being able to afford to pay.
This is about pathetic losers who feel they deserve something for
nothing.

This isn't about theory at all. Helping to facilitate the use of
illegal software would technically make you an accessory. You speak of
how this is a request from your "client" which denotes a business
relationship of some kind. Perhaps you feel that it's OK for you to
make money from the game instead of the people who actually brought it
to market. That would be most interesting indeed. I bet you wouldn't
be so cavalier if your clients could get away with using your hosting
services without paying for them.
