Mid-low level design

Everything but the GUI is starting to flesh out in the attached  
document.  Read it, make changes, and send them back.  We'll get this  
thing designed as best we can before I start hacking some more.

Now, some things are lower-level than others, so we'll try to flesh  
them out together.
