[freespace2] unstable speed of game?

Looks like I found the problem, it's completly Voodoo unrelated.
In src/io/timer.cpp there is:
#ifndef NDEBUG
#define USE_TIMING
#endif
I recompiled without NDEBUG, and speed is now good.
Why NDEBUG breaks TIMING?
