Running linux server on a different port

I can't get the linux server to accept connections on a different port.

I have the follwing line in the main/config_mp_server.cfg file:
set net port 12203

When the server launches, it opens port 12203. I then go to the client
and from the console type "connect XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:12203" (where XXX's are
my IP of course), and it keeps trying and I see nothing on the server
console.

Does this version of the server support running on a different port other
than the default? Does the client attempt connections on other ports when
you specify it like I did?

Help!
