When I set up my debian box I compiled a 2.6 kernel (using some guide, I 
had never compiled any kernel before) optimized for a game server, as 
the guide claimed. That included to edit a file and look for that 
"1000Hz thing".

I am happy to read that this was a pretty good value, as the machine is 
a dedicated BF2 server only, so all the CPU cycles can be used.
