linux server shutdown issue?

Unlike the windows server which seems to go though a proper
shutdown, when the linux server is quit either via 'exit' on the
console or CTRL+C it appears to just bin instantly. No
shutdown handlers appear to be called at all. Is this a known
issue, or am I just imagining it?
