Don, I doubt that many gamers walking in to their local store to buy a
game give much consideration to how or if there will be servers
available to support their gaming. EA certainly made no promices on the
box for Linux servers, Windows servers, or any other kind of servers for
that matter. They did, however promice a Linux server on their official
website, www.battlefield1942.com and gave a status in five of their
community update that I was able to locate:

Linux server
Still being debugged. This is taking longer than we expected. You can
imagine the process...run server, crash, fix, run server, crash, fix...
etc.

Linux Server
Still in debug mode. We're working as quickly as possible to get this
out to you... so please bear with us.

LINUX SERVER
This is still being debugged. We've got a nasty bug with client
connections being detected. Once that's out of the way we'll go into
full beta testing with the Linux server.

Linux Server Update
We're in beta testing on the linux standalone server. We're finding some
nasty bugs, you can expect to see this as soon as we get those issues
cleaned up.

Linux Server
The Linux Server has hit a snag. the 1.2 patch. We need to integrate the
fixes from the 1.2 patch into it prior to release. So, expect it to lag
a bit behind the release of the 1.2 patch.

You'll notice that there has been no mention since and we're up to
/community_message_16.jsp.

By the way, RTR does not work with the Linux 1.3 server, it causes
clients to crash during authentication.
