Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror Installer FAQ

Q
What are the system requirements for this installer?
A
Linux 2.2 kernel or higher
glibc-2.1 or higher
ISO 9660 CDROM file system support
Microsoft Joilet CDROM extensions
Your Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror CDROM.

Q
How do I install Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror?
A
Download the installer for your CD.
For the USA version, get tacticalops-3.5.0-install-x86.run.
For the European version, get tacticalops-3.1.9-install-x86.run, tacticalops-3.3.2-euro-x86.run, tacticalops-3.4.0-x86.run and tacticalops-3.5.0-x86.run
Open a shell and run ./tacticalops-3.5.0-install-x86.run (or./tacticalops-3.1.9-install-x86.run)
When the install has finished, run the 3.3.2 patch, then the 3.4.0 patch and finally the 3.5.0 patch.

Q How do I know what Tactical Ops CD I have?
A
If you have played in Windows, the USA version would install as 3.1.0 and the European as 3.1.9.

The contents of the USA cdrom should look like this.

The contents of the European cdrom should look like this.

Q
Running ./tacticalops-3.5.0-install-x86.run doesn't do anything.
A
Run chmod +x tacticalops-3.5.0-install-x86.run first.

Q How come there are more files to download for the European version?
A I updated the USA installer recently to install the game and patch up to 3.5.0 at the same time.  My European CD has read errors so I cannot update it.

Q
The installer keeps asking for the Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror CDROM. I have it mounted in my cdrom drive.
A
If you have supermount installed, disable it and mount your cdrom drive manually.
A
Make sure you have Joilet and ISO 9660 CDROM file system support installed.
A
If the installer still can't find your cdrom, then run export SETUP_CDROM=/mnt/cdrom before you run the installer from the same shell.  Replace /mnt/cdrom with your cdrom's mount point.

Q
I mount my CDROM in some really obscure place.
A
These are the mount points that will work without doing anything:

/mnt
/mnt/cdrecorder
/mnt/cdrom
/mnt/dvd
/media/cdrecorder
/media/cdrom
/media/dvd
/cdrom

If it is not listed here, you will have to set SETUP_CDROM before you run the installer.
eg. If you mount your CDROM under /mnt/cdrom0 then open a shell and type
export SETUP_CDROM=/mnt/cdrom0
./tacticalops-3.5.0-install-x86.run

Q
During installation, I get some error in my shell and then this:
Unable to find file 'System'
Unable to find file 'Textures'
Unable to find file 'TacticalOps'
Unable to find file 'Web'

A
If you're using the updated 3.5.0 USA installer, then install unshield and run the installer again.  You will have to uninstall Tactical Ops first by running the uninstall script in the installation directory.
A
This currently applies to the European installer only, or the old USA installer.  You will have to install wine from here or here.  If you have wine, winex or cedega installed, it will be used instead of the binaries I include with the installer.  Once you have installed either wine, winex or cedega, you should be able to run the installer sucessfully.

Q
When I run 'tacticalops', I get this error:
Failed to load 'Engine': Can't find file for package 'Engine'
A
See the above answer.  This is a result of wine failing to run on your system.

Q
Why do I need wine or unshield?
A
The updated USA installer uses unshield to extract the files from the CD.  The old USA installer and current European installer use wine.

Q
Can I specify where wine is installed on my system?
A
Yes, run export WINE_EXEC=/path/to/bin/wine before you run the installer.
eg. export WINE_EXEC=/opt/wine/bin/wine
./tacticalops-3.1.9-install-x86.run

Q
Tactical Ops crashes when choosing a map to play on or when entering the main menu.
A
Check the underside of your CD.  Is it scratched/dirty?

Q
How do I play in French/German/Italian/etc?
A
Install the latest patch.
Edit ~/.TacticalOps/System/TacticalOps.ini (or /usr/local/games/tacticalops/System/TacticalOps.ini if you haven't run the game yet)
Change Language=int to
Language=frt for French
Language=det for German
Language=est for Spanish
Language=itt for Italian

Q
OpenGL performance isn't that great.
A
Try the old OpenGLDrv.so file.   Extract to your tacticalops/System directory.

Q
How do I uninstall Tactical Ops?
A
Run the script named uninstall in the installation directory.
