I recently compared ATI's Catalyst drivers for Windows
and the fglrx drivers from Schneider Digital for XFree 4.3.x. I used these OpenGL test programs for comparison and these were my results:
Test
Fps on Linux
Fps on Windows
cubes
290
340
grid
410
690
quark
350
680
stars
440
600
As you can see, we are getting roughly 36% less fps on Linux compared to the Catalyst
drivers. Btw, these tests were run on Lenin.
Update
Tried the 3.2.8 drivers (now available from ati.com.) today, the OpenGL performance is roughly (no more
than 9 frames difference) the same as in the table above. Last benchmark was done with a
2.x driver, I'm wondering what justifies the new major number :P.
