It shouldn't matter, on all counts. 32-bit binaries are the priority 
right now (but they'll run on a 64-bit system). I develop on Ubuntu at 
the moment, but if it doesn't work on any reasonable distro (including 
FreeBSD's linux binary compatibility), it's considered a serious bug.

In short: use what you like.
