that's because the ucc wrapper script sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH and things
like that, to get around the local libraries ucc wants to use.

i was just running it from inside the system directory because that's
where i was :) 

i was missing the -x on the command line, and it was giving out a
non-obvious error message. i'd thought i'd just cut and pasted it from
the example in the readme, but it looks like i hit ctrl-W one too many
times.
