OT: Original UT Audio Problem

I finally got Unreal Tournament (the original) to install on my box. 

I figure some people here probably played UT for linux, and since I can't
find anything on google, or loki's (dead) site, I thought I'd ask you
helpful folks.

I can't seem to get audio in the game to work unless I run it as root.
And yes, permissions on /dev/dsp are correct (crw-rw-rw-), because every
other program works are normal user.

Anyone had a similar problem (hopefully with a fix) back in the day?
