SMPEG fails to compile with mingw

I'm using MSYS + MinGW to compile SMPEG on windows, ./configure fails with the following:

$ ./configure
checking build system type... i686-pc-mingw32
checking host system type... i686-pc-mingw32
checking target system type... i686-pc-mingw32
./configure: line 1393: syntax error near unexpected token `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(smpeg,'
./configure: line 1393: `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE(smpeg, $VERSION)'

Has anyone gotten this library to compile using MinGW?
