[quake2] sound problems

Is your volume turned up?  In both quake and through aumix, including 
the pcm mixer?  Can you play other digital music (like MP3s)?
It sounds to me like either sound isn't set up correctly on your box, 
or some other process has got a hold on /dev/dsp
