Are you using the Nvidia driver? It's a bit buggy and fixes are hard to come
by. It has nothing to do with openbox. See for example

Also if your X server crashed, there won't be anything in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log, because it gets overwritten when the server
restarts. If you're lucky there will be a /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old.
