[openbox] i can not use gnome/openbox

I lost some context here, but after upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10,
I also had problemd with using OpenBox as window manager under Gnome.

I created a file ~/.gnomerc with the following two lines in it:

    WINDOW_MANAGER=openbox
    export WINDOW_MANAGER

And I used the "regular" Gnome session when logging in.
