Does the "trick" stop the normal arrow keys from working in the menu?
If it does, the explanation is simple, the alphanumeric keys have lower
keycodes than the arrow keys, and openbox simply looks for the keys
by the keysym (ie "Down", "Up" etc), and finds the alphanumeric ones first.
