Have you actually tried that out live?

It wont kill your shell. It will just terminate the execution of xinitrc.

Try kill -9 $PPID (yes, two P, the _parent_)

Also, if you're using crypt-mounted devices, lazy-umount them as well before 
killing:
sudo umount -l /home
