I forgot all about this...  Dug more into it now and discovered the
error;  a rogue /usr/local/bin/openbox that overrode the one with your
patch.  Stupid of me.  I'm sorry you went through all that trouble.  :-/

It works just fine now, though I believe I've seen sometimes that the
wrong window is given focus (when using directional-focus and one window
covers another completely).  I've not been able to reproduce that in a
consistent manner though, so don't worry about it for now.
