Have you tried the directional focus actions?  They'll let you move
around a cluttered desktop with a different perspective.

If you use the default bindings, you can alt-tab to the window (don't
release alt) and hit alt-f4 to close the window which is being
targeted, without ever focusing it.  Most any keybingings work on the
window being targeted by focus cycling when you are in the middle of
it.

Yeh, using the monitor where focus is does sound nice.
