[openbox] client-list-menu

Hello, hello, hello.

It sounds to me like you just want an item to be highlighted initially
when the menu is created--this shouldn't be specific to client-list-menu.

You should probably check out bug 2228 in bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2228
The title is, aptly, "No entry initially highlighted upon opening a
menu." There is a bit of a discussion about it and possible future
solutions. There is no patch at the moment.

I doubt anything is being done about this bug at the moment, but patches
would obviously be welcome.

Some of the code for openbox is a bit hard to wade through, but I'm sure
this bug will get fixed some time or another. For now, just use the
down key followed by enter.
