If you have imagemagick installed, you can use the 'import' program,
from a shell. I do this:

sleep 6; import -window root foo.png

Then you have 6 seconds in which to do all the menu opening you like.
This same principle can be applied with any screen grabbing program. I
believe the gimp can import a screenshot of the entire desktop after a
certain delay also.

Wishing you luck in your screen shooting forays,

Tim
