I agree that the mailing list is better.
A forum needs operators and after a while messages need to be deleted,
in the mailing list I can keep my own administration and export the
messages I don't need but still keep them available.

I don't have any forum software (and honestly, don't want it).

Last time this came up, the general consensus is that the mailing list
is
better.  (*shrug*)
