About troubles regarding the official gtk build (linked against
msvcrt.dll) I can't say much.
Maybe this link helps though:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235460%28v=VS.90%29.aspx

If it indeed causes the problems, there might be a way to adapt the
technique to dynamic link a project against msvcrt.dll (instead of
MSVCR90.dll) from vistual studio 2005 to the current version.
http://kobyk.wordpress.com/2007/07/20/dynamically-linking-with-msvcrtdll-using-visual-c-2005/

apparently xchat-wdk is using that technique to create builds that run
on xp and newer without the need of any redist packages
http://code.google.com/p/xchat-wdk/wiki/InfoNN

hope that helps a bit
